I've decided that the silence of my flist is a conspiracy to make me go back to news link roundups.....

Pretty Bird Woman House rises from the ashes

Antiwar veterans prevented from marching in Veterans Day Parade. Supposedly, organizers claim the parade is to "thank veterans" and not for political statements.

An independent panel is studying the sentences of Crack/Cocaine offenders. They may recommend that the sentences be reduced by as much as 37 months.

Ron Paul has been getting a lot of press since he isn't as crazy about starting a world war as some of the Republican Presidential candidates. However, one shouldn't forget Paul's legislative record which includes bills to prohibit federal funds for population control or family planning, a bill to declare human life as existing from conception, a bill to ban flag burning, and another to repeal the minimum wage.

So the oil spill last week - initially it was thought to be 140 gallons. Oops, we mean 58,000 gallons. Much of the damage is due to the fact that oil booms were not immediately put into place which allowed the oil to spread. The reason? Say it with me: "Fish and Game said that private companies would handle the spill cleanup, companies hired by the ship's owners". Congratulations, Fish and Game, you have irreparably damaged California's tourism and seafood economies.

Worse and worse for the oceans - storms in Russia sank five shipping vessels in and around the Black Sea. One off of Ukraine spilled 2,000 TONS of fuel oil, and in the Black and Azov Sea, three freighters carring sulfer sank.

Smog from shipping fules heart and lung disease. All the more reason to label everything with country of origin so we can choose to shop locally if we want to.

The National Intelligence Estimate on Iran is being released - sort of. The White House is holding back all portions that don't support Cheney's bottom line.

Okay, I can't go vegetarian, but someone clearly wants to make me want to. Specifically the USDA - Meat found to be contaminated with E. coli during processing is labeled "cook-only" and sold.

Starvation or the Taliban. The war isn't stopping either.

Potential environmental disaster if bird flu epidemic strikes? I find this extremely interesting -- It's only in the past decade that the effect of widespread antibiotic (including the ever popular anti-biotic soap and hand cremes) on the enviroment have been recognized. I hope this gets the attention it deserves before the worst case happens. Then again, my optimism dies hard.

The fingerprints of British visitors to the US will be stored by the FBI. I wonder if this is British only, or if it will be any and all foreign tourists/visitors to the US. Also:
Britons already have their credit card details and email accountsinspected by the American authorities following a deal between the EUand the Department of Homeland Security. Now passengers face having alltheir credit card transactions traced when using one to book a flight. And travellers giving an email address to an airline will be open tohaving all messages they send and receive from that address scrutinised. Anyone want to join me at an off-grid self sufficient homestead? This big brother stuff is just getting out of hand.

Bahrain athlete stripped of citizenship for running in Israeli marathon. Which is against the law in that Bahrain.

And in a story that is more fitting to the Onion, but sadly true, the US Army is apologizing to families of soldiers KIA that received notices to re-enlist

It's not just New Orleans, folks.

Poison Water in Appalachia

They've been trying to get bids to lay water lines for over two years, but every time, the bids have been deemed "over". As a result, residents are limited to the random 12-24 gallons delived weekly for their drinking and cooking. It's not enough to bathe, so they have to use the water despite the fact that water contaminated with heavy metals causes rashes.

Where's superfund? The EPA? You can't tell me that the levels in their water supply are safe (even with the "new" definition of safe given by Bush-ists).
