So, when did the boys figure out that Sam's visions are stronger near the demon? Or is that fanon?

I don't remember that ever coming out in canon; I think it's purely fanon.

Nope nope it's canon! Sort of. In Salvation, when the three of them are in the hotel room with John (the "something like this happens to your brother you call me." "Call you?" scene), Sam says something like "it's like the closer we get to it, the worse the visions get."

Now I don't know if that's closer geographically or closer as in "closer to killing it" but it's Sorta Canon.
