jebbypal: (ff trap)

My personal laptop, which I haven't turned on in about 9 mos or more, is telling me that windows update can't check for updates because it's not running and that I may need to restart my computer.

I've restarted twice and still have same thing going on. Any thoughts??? Need to figure out if this is fixable tonight, or if I just need to say f* it and take my work laptop.

Thanks!!!

Here from network, and that sounds slightly similar to what I dealt with with my computer this past week. My Windows Update wasn't working correctly, my Windows kept not-responding, and my computer kept getting a little pissy at me. My system restore wasn't working because it kept swearing that Windows files weren't where they should have been.

Turns out that a DLL issue had caused my user profile to become set to both HomeUsers and Admin; it can only be set to one thing, and it had pretty successfully borked itself trying to figure out what to do.

Unfortunately, I had to have a professional fix my computer. It took 2 hours, admittedly, but. Still had to ask the nice people at answerslive to fix it, and fork over 99 bucks for the privilege.

You should be able to run this:
http://support.microsoft.com/mats/windows_update/
for free and see if it helps any.

Maybe this:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_xp-windows_update/windows-update-component-must-be-repairednot-fixed/99bd8203-bb97-421a-aedd-8e35eb8e7af7

(I should add here that I'm the kind of person who tends to go to an IT person after having exhausted all self-help, largely because I've often found solutions on my own.)

Oh, trust me. So did I. We spent a lot of time muttering about the fact that that shouldn't have been able to happen.
