Q for Mac people with thumb drives...
May. 17th, 2008 12:28 amOkay, so here's the deal -- my old (as in four years in all likelyhood) thumb drive works fine. However, I've primarily used it on PCs during it's life. Since starting to use it on Macs, there's been a curious event --- if I don't have space to put something on it, I go to delete something I don't need. However, when I do this on the mac, the actual memory size available doesn't change and when I then put it on a PC the files are still there and I have to delete them on the PC to actually get the space back.
I dunno if this is due to the generation it was made or if it's a fact from always using on PC or what.
So I bought a new (sony) thumb drive tonight. Do i need to start using it on the Mac first and format it there so that I'll be able to actually delete things? Or do I need to do some trick to delete things on a thumb drive on a mac? (a la, back in the day when copying a file off a disk on to the desktop on a mac didn't mean the file had actually been copied, but rather that a shortcut had been made. And to copy you actually had to put the file into a folder -- yes, this is how far back that I got this thumb drive).
So after many frustrating fights with the printer at work, I've had enough. Been talking about it, but decided I'd go ahead and go price them tonight -- because I wanted to get a work exclusive thumb drive too. Surprisingly, I found that the laser printers were only 100 - 300 dollars nowadays. After some hemming and hawing, I went ahead and purchased a black only. The one thing that I was hesitating on, and the guy helping me wouldn't give me a straight answer (or didn't know) was the effect of getting 8MB versus 32MB memory with the printer. I print a lot of pdf's and stuff, so the file sizes can be big. Is this going to slow things down significantly? It's still in the box, so I can still exchange it if I want (though I was planning on breaking it out this weekend).
