I was talking about this with [livejournal.com profile] docmichelle and did get the recipe from my parents. I thought that probably more than a few people might appreciate this though so here it is:
And trust me....it is oh soo good w/ biscuits!!

In separate bowl before you start, mix 1 tbsp of cocoa, 2tbsp of sugar with about a tbsp of water. This needs to be mixed until it is a liquid mixture. Set aside.

On the stove, melt 2 tbsp of butter (or if you are from the south, bacon grease) in a large, deep skillet. Add 2 Tbsp of flour and mix well. If the mixture is too thick (as in not mixing, or doughy) add butter by the tsp till you have a thick gooey mixture (not too dry, not too wet. Wonderful description, but if you've made gravy before you know what I mean). Mix and cook while mixing for about 30 sec---this eliminates the floury taste.

Add 1 c of Milk and stir in --- keep stirring! This is important. If things are too thick again, add about 1/2 cup of milk. You want this to be just above the consistency of whole milk to start off with. Now add the liquid cocoa mixture.

Keep stirring constantly as the gravy boils (need to do this so the bottom doesn't burn). As it boils, the gravy will thicken. Turn off the heat and stop when it reaches the desired thickness.

As always, if it has a problem thickening, add a pinch of cornstarch or arrowroot. Potato starch can also be subsituted, but I don't think it works quite as well as arrowroot as a replacement for cornstarch.

Ta da, chocolate gravy---sure to impress the kids or anyone w/ a sweet tooth. Delicious served over fresh biscuits with bacon for breakfast. Mmmmm...need to buy cocoa now!
