Joss Whedon throws his hat into the "Remove the Rating for Captivity" campaign

I hadn't seen any thing about this and figured that many of you might be interested. Basically, the author started a campaign to Remove the Rating from the "torture/horror" movie, Captivity, after being severely offended by the billboard she saw on the highway while her children were in the car.

Interesting read. And frankly, I support it because I get so sick and tired of seeing the freaking ads on TV during Thursday night television --- and those ads apparently are tame compared to the billboards that the advertising company put up in violation of MPAA rulings.

couple of weeks ago I was driving my son to school when I took a left onto LaBrea, and, as usual, sat in traffic for a couple of minutes. As we waited for the construction bottleneck to ease up, we sang along with the new Shins CD. And then, at the same moment, we fell silent.

We were both noticing the same thing.

It was a billboard for a movie. There was actress Elisha Cuthbert, super-heavily made up-dare I say whorishly-- being used as the centerpiece of the most repulsive, horrifying, woman-hating, human- hating thing I have ever seen in public.

The first image had a black-gloved hand over her mouth, titled CAPTURE. Next, her eyes begged for rescue as her mascara ran and her bloody finger tried to pry its way out of a cage, titled CONFINEMENT.

In the next picture, titled TORTURE, she was encased in a strange mask, with tubes coming out of her nose, draining blood. Maybe. We couldn't figure out if it was tubes or a hook-that was another thing about it-you had to keep looking to figure out what the hell was going on.

The last frame was Elisha, may her career rest in peace after posing for this, hanging dead, lying on her back with one breast prominently displayed. The word in this frame was TERMINATION.

In the end, you just cannot legislate human decency. It's very encouraging to see people come together to fight against something dispicable.

Wow. I have no words. Not about the asshat that put up the billboards or the asswipes who made the flick in the first place, anyway. But the woman who did something about it? She rocks.

I haven't seen a billboard, but I saw the art. I'm made of pretty stern stuff and watch a great deal of horror. I also understand that horror is not everyone's cup of tea. But when I looked at that artwork, I had a physical reaction. Right before I uttered, "Christ on a bike..." with the kind of shock most people reserve for horrible family news.

I don't believe in censorship. I just wish people had more decency. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.

It kind of amazed me how appalled I was when I saw the images. I googled to see what the billboard looked like - and I kinda wish I hadn't. The final poster that should be showing up in cinema lobbies everywhere is not so graphic but equally tasteless.

That is horrifyingly repulsive. I hope therating gets removed. If it's not too late, I am going to write a letter this wekeend too because that is utterly outrageous.

And good for Joss! Buffy, with its wit and feminism is in another universe as far as horror genre is concerned.
