SN fic recs

Okay, so between my reading binge and then being forced to listen to science for two days, I went trolling for some fanfic. Sadly, I have to admit waay too much ignorance about Supernatural fandom in general as to who's the BNF (well, except for the obvious:P Though they hate to have it pointed out to them). So probably anything I ever rec in SN fandom will have already been discovered and discussed by billions of people and I'm just ignorant. If that's the case, ignore me, please. And leave me to my ignorance instead of calling me out. We all like to feel useful, no?
Anyways, here's two.
It's always nice when I have to go look up the meaning of the title..seriously, it's good. A raconteur is a person who is skilled in relating stories and anecdotes interestingly --- and tigriswolf definitely qualifies. The exact identity of the narrator is unknown from the story, other than she's an old woman with some advice and truth for Dean Winchester. The gist of the story (which I sooo don't want to spoil) is incredibly haunting and makes me wonder if there's any chance that Kripke might be leaning towards something to the same effect. Probably not, but an interesting theory nonetheless.
Basically the narrator is talking to Dean about John's sacrifice. The tone makes me think of Missouri to an extent, but from the author notes, I don't think that's the case. It's short, and to the point, and I wish there was more I could say about it without spoiling it. Just make this one leap of trust and read it. If you hate it, never listen to me again.
Yes, I'm scared of the MPAA and rewording the actual ratings. So sue me, well no don't, I'm a grad student and you'd be sorely disappointed.
In 1900 words, Eloise explores all the broken bones that Sam's suffered through the years and the circumstances that caused them. Even better, she follows the family to the hospital where most of the good scenes take place. Eloise captures both an adult and child Sam incredibly well. The Winchester family dynamic is believable. My favorite line:
This is one of those fics that I have a feeling will become easily confused with canon in a few short months.
That's all for now. Oh, I did find a community where someone's making their own recs. Not many yet, but it'll probably be more active than I since I probably shouldn't be reading anything other than science. Or ya know, working on the sweet charity fics I owe PT.

And it was Dean who made Dad take him to the ER, and Sam thinks hereally does remember that part, everything white and bright and scary, full of people who weren’t Dean and Dad. He’d howled louder than anybanshee, and it had been for his brother. Dean said that was onlybecause his name was perfect for howling – the keening effect you gotwith ‘Deeeeeeean’ was way more impressive than just yelling ‘Dad’ – but Sam knew better. Even then, at four, he knew better.

Date: 2006-11-20 05:39 am (UTC)A fellow SPN fan spoke of BNFs and I went "Out of curiosity, who are the BNFs?" I hadn't heard any of the names she mentioned. I don't read Wincest, see. :-)

Date: 2006-11-20 03:09 pm (UTC)I'm not against any of it, though a story has to be pretty good for me to read it if it's slash. But I've been in plenty of slash oriented fandoms (highlander and sentinel come to mind) and never had such a problem finding good non slash fics to read. But I know part of it is I'm just not reading fanfic at least 3 hrs a day anymore probably as well.;)
