Earlier this week,
twistedchick sounded the alarm after the ACLU called to inform her of an impending bill that Senator Arlen Spector was coauthoring. Daily Kos now has a front page article about the details as well as information about three other bills that while not as much a blank check for the President to eavesdrop on whoever he pleases, similarly give him significant loopholes around the FISA court when issueing wiretap and surveillance warrants.
Right now, I really regret my vote for Spector last year --- I let myself be scared into voting for him by the prospect that if he wasn't elected the new chair of the judiciary committee would have been an evangelical wingnut from another state. Instead, Spector started kissing the feet of cheney and bush to keep his position since he knew they disagreed on abortion. It makes me sick.
But, if his bill gets through and signed, say hello to 1984. This is definitely something to call and harrass your senators about. Tell them you want them to vote no to the the National Security Surveillance Act (S. S. 2543) authored by Spector (as well as Herr Cheney). Also tell them you don't want any legilation passed that takes power away from FISA. The president can get secret wiretaps if he wants them now -- he just at some point (even retroactively if I recall correctly) has to present the information to the FISA for the warrant.
