You know, one thing that pandora radio has caused me to realize is that I don't like a band necessarily for the genre of music (though dude, good drum beats are always a plus). Musically, another band can hit the same notes and riffs, but if the tone of the vocals is "off", it does nothing for me. Worse, it generally causes me to edge in annoyance (or rage in extreme cases). And this applies to both female and male vocalists.

Case in point: I LOVE Snow Patrol. Play a song by Coldplay though, and you'll earn daggers from my eyes. B is very amused by this. Of course, he understands it like very few of the other people in my life since the same is true for him with Dave Matthews.

I wonder how much out of the mainstream I am with how much vocal tone rules my musical tastes. A lot, I'm willing to bet because vocal tone pretty much rules everything about me. I've declared people my sworn enemies on just the basis of vocal tone in some circumstances (a habit I had in nursery school that my mother spent MANY years trying to train me out of. She's succeeded mostly, but if my first impression of your voice is negative, it's very hard for me to stick around long enough to develop anything else). And as many of you know, this made my life very difficult when I was surrounded by a lab full of men and women with high pitched voices.

Of course, I know the irony, my own voice to everyone else probably falls into the magic pitch that I would probably hate if I were forced to listen to it *shudders at memories*. I'm lucky that B's mom has one of the oddest voices on the face of the earth --- probably the only reason he's not negatively affected by mine.

Yeah, umm, just some useless rambling....and me noticing that I've started to abuse the caps lock mightily.

Eeeeee! A song by Marty Casey and the Lovehammers just came on. I didn't know it was out yet!!!

I completely agree! I adore Snow Patrol, but turning the radio to Coldplay will earn someone daggers from me -- and not just from my eyes. :p

Dave rubs some people the wrong way. I love DMB, and Dave's voice in particular, but almost everyone around me hates them. *shrugs* Go figure.

While I agree on the vocal tone, just about everything falls into the "what makes this matter more to me" category. I happen to like things from both Snow Patrol and Coldplay, for instance.

I think with me that the various factors all depend on my taste, not necessarily talent. Because, honestly, I could care less how awesome the notes are that Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, or Christina Aguilera can hit, etc. I look for the sound, the meaning, the flow, and, well, everything.

All of it is relative, though. It means different things to different people. ;-)

Huh. Really? That's a first. Although I can see where it can come from.
