Geez louise, I go away for 24 hrs and suddenly everyone's muse bites!!! Why can't you do this when I'm at home with a comfie (or at least more comfie) computer sitch? My friend does have internet access (cable even), but the hookup is nowhere near her desk. Last night when I checked my email, I did the thing of just squatting in the floor but after ten minutes, my back oh so helpfully reminded me that I have the back of a forty year old and if I didn't want it to go out THAT MINUTE, I would get my ass off the floor. Needless to say, threats from my back win out over internet addiction.
today, I was smart. Pulled the chair over and put the laptop in my lap. Not perfect and not good for long bouts but enough for half an hour or so to check mail and make a quick "skip60" through my flist. Course, this did not entail clicking on any lj cuts, so reading of stories (and comments) will come much later.
Oh, so I bought this book to read while I'm out here. Can't remember the author offhand (and am not getting up to look), but the title is Stonehenge. Fantasy/historical w/ a tad of mystery to the plot. And the plot itself is good, but well, the author's delivery has a lot to be desired. Not the worst written book I've read by far, but it's bad enough for me to be surprised its not self published! The author is using third person omnicient and skipping in and out of different character's thought streams w/in the same paragraph. Disconcerting to say the least. To top it off, he's only really shown the character development of one of the three main characters---the other two were left on their own for the first third of the book before they both come back to meddle w/ the third's life. Except the development that he'd done of that character would lead me to think that the guy would react in a much different way than he actually has. It just could have been done so much better. On the other hand, I guess you can almost learn more from reading a badly written book w/ a decent plot than a beautifully written book to an extent. Just easier to notice what is done WRONG than what is done right for the most part.
Conference is going. One day down, one and a half to go (including the actual poster presentation itself). And the head of the training grant didn't come herself, so if I decide to sneak off at some point early, it won't be horribly noticeable. All I can say for sure is that it is a hell of a lot easier to stay away and focused for 8 hours of science talking when you aren't depressed as hell.
Oh, and the world might end --- I woke up at 6:30 this morning without the aid of any alarm whatsoever. And I was awake. Which is actually kinda painful because I can't find any type of thing that looks like a climate control in this apartment and it's maintaining a very dry 80+. given that outside it is only 78, not fun. Surprised I slept as well as I did last night since I generally don't sleep well if I can't have a sheet or something on me. Would have opened the windows but my friend is very cold blooded and had on three layers when she was in here with me. Uggghh!
Well, off to see if I can find anywhere here in BAttery Park to eat or if I'm going to have to head uptown to Times Square area that I'm more familiar with. Toodle loo.
