I talked to my mother on the phone today and she told me that Oprah was in the Katrina affected areas w/ a doctor that she sometimes has on the show. I was ready to dismiss the story as Dr. Phil giving peptalks till she really started the story...
Oprah was actually in NO. She went so that she could go see the 'Dome to see if it was really as bad as advertised. (She also talked to people who had been there).
But that wasn't what was news to me.
The doctor that accompanied Oprah was actually a medical doctor. And he gained access to the morgues (cameras were not allowed). Apparently people who are deemed "too bad off to help" are being placed in the morgues so they can "die peacefully". The doctor went in...a little while later he was shown wheeling a guy out that he'd given a tracheotomy to inside the morgue and said "this one isn't ready to die yet". (I'm not sure where this was. I think my mom said it was one of the airport refugee centers.)
Tell me, Dr. Frist, Dobson, where are you now? The people didn't choose to be stranded. They didn't choose to be dehydrated. They didn't live that way for years upon years with no hope of change in their medical status. Why aren't you ensuring that they are helped now? Why aren't you screaming until the Red Cross is allowed access to every part of the city and the refugees? Why isn't every second year medical student in the nation that knows how to administer a saline drip being bussed to the area??
The public wants to know.
