A/N: I only got into Who recently, and have only seen the most recent series. Not sure if this has been covered in classic Who; I'm sure it's been covered in other fics, but this bunny won't stop biting my ankles and so I'm writing it. Maybe it will mean the big brother bunny will lose interest and leave me alone. Unbetaed, so all mistakes and poor wording are my own.

Even in the death of the universe, life can be born. Life unlike any that came before, and for whom time moves differently, but life - all at once springing into sentience and accessing all of time through the energy that fed it. All around it were new things – space, emptiness, light, dark, matter, heat, suns, fusion, fission, and lives.

Like all living things, it multiplied and learned. Curiosity grew. The desire to explore the matter through which their energy flowed. Disagreement boiled – they existed throughout the universe, but not in it. The universe’s end lay behind them, the birth before. Going into the universe rather than being a part of it could alter their own evolution, or affect that of the others’.

As with all species, children do not always listen. A group set out. And lo, the Rift was born.

The Rift and the children attracted attention fairly quickly. Time Lords came and evaluated and debated.

The universe was shaking. Everything could be lost for everyone and all time. But children are stubborn and few could be convinced to return to their proper state. Killing children is always repugnant, and so a compromise was found.

TARDIS. Time and relative dimension in space. Within these machines, the universe of matter could be protected from the sheer energy and paradox of the children while they could observe the universe and all its life within the context of time. Living ships, fueled by the children themselves.

The rest were horrified. Containment. Cut off from the collective mind, from the ebb and flows of the universe’s energies. Fortunately, this had a happy ending. Powering the many TARDIS, the children would grow fatigued. Periodically, they’d be drawn to what remained of the Rift to feed on the ambient energy drifting through. These were joyous times. The children were able to communicate all they saw and experienced while the rest were able to share the taste and knowledge of the births to come.

And so the TARDIS became essential to the race of the Time Lords. The living ships always knew when and where time deviated. They always made sure that their companions were in the right place to make sure their race survived.

Oh, this is gorgeous!

Loved the poetry of the images, and the all-round mythic quality of the fic overall.

Nicely written :-)
