Shiny Wrappers -- Firefly

“Why him? Why Simon?” River asks.

Kaylee looks away down the dirt thoroughfare where Simon is walking with Mal and Jayne. She understands the question – she’s just never been able to answer it when Zoe or Inara asked. Coming from River though, she feels like she needs to answer. As if this were a test much like what her Pa will do to Simon should they ever meet.

Pa and Simon, that’ll be an interesting day. She’ll need to remember to pay Jayne to keep Mal busy. No, wait, Jayne ain’t exactly trustworthy. Zoe then. After all, Zoe owes her for all the interference Kaylee ran when Zoe and Wash started up in the beginning.

“Is it just because he’s new and shiny? That he’s different?”

Kaylee looks back at River and pushes her away slightly. “No, silly.” She can tell that River doesn’t believe her. “Okay, yeah, that was the attraction at first. I mean the Core. I’d only seen pictures of people from the Core before I met Inara and then here was this fancy handsome surgeon. But trust me, that’s not all of it.”

“So what’s the rest?”

Kaylee remembers how kind Simon was when she was recovering from her gunshot wound. He took the time to make sure she rehabbed quickly even though River was still adjusting to the ship and the crew. The times that he’d just relax and just be when no one else was around.

“You’re right, the shiny attracted me. But trust me, a shiny boy will attract you some day too. But it’s who they really are underneath the wrapper that keeps you around,” Kaylee replies with an eyebrow wiggle that would do Jayne proud. “Simon, he’s just as shiny under it all as he was when I first found out he was from the Core.”
