Well, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] poisontaster's visit, I figured I'd try to do a 15 minute timed writing for Book for joss 100. This is for 011, yesterday. I haven't gone over it again, so typos are likely. Hey, I even think I managed to do a happy one. Or at least angst free.

Yesterday was the happiest one he could remember. Today was bittersweet. Tomorrow would be peaceful.

Serenity arrived at Haven for a job, a delivery to be specific. He hadn’t asked what it was. Book had learned early that being overly curious about the cargo only pained his conscience. He and the Lord knew that Malcom Reynolds was rarely troubled by his own.

Still, a job to a friendly planet, aka Alliance-free, was a cause for celebration. River and Simon got to stretch their legs. Kaylee delighted in fixing something different than Serenity (though he suspected she’d deny it if asked). The guns were left holstered with their safeties on, and he was able to breathe a sigh of relief.

Even better, the settlement gave him fresh produce and meat with which to cook and after a communal meal, they listened to a sermon without so much as a groan. Well, the one from Mal as he walked away, but all other sounds were joyous Amen’s.

He went to bed happy and content. He woke today relaxed and with more inner peace than he’d felt in a long time. It wasn’t to be for long.

As soon as the settlement had broken their fast, the town leaders approached him with their invitation. It didn’t take him long to accept, but he did do it with a heavy heart. There was his promise to look out for Simon and River. He’d miss Kaylee, Jayne, and all the rest.

He was torn between the desire to follow his calling and his loyalty to his friends.

As usual, it was River that exposed the heart of his problem. “Serenity will always be your home, but you’ll never be her Shepherd.”

The girl, as always, was right. Malcolm Reynolds didn’t suffer any interference in the way he ran his ship, at least not from Book. And other than Jayne, he wasn’t sure if anyone really listened to the lessons he preached.

Today was bittersweet as he said goodbye to the ship and crew that had kept him safe on his journey from Persephone to Haven.
