Okay, so I'm all about operation get in shape. Because I've been a couch potato for a solid 3-4 years now, not much better before that due to injuries, and at the post-35 age of "my health is only going to go downhill if I don't because I no longer have youth on my side" (assuming I ever did).

However, this summer's attempts to kick it off proved several things once again:
1. I hate running and am unlikely to buy into the current cult of marathons that seems to be the in thing of young professionals my age. Frankly, I think the rest of you that buy in to it need a 12-step program since most inevitably take it to the extreme. J, my best friend, who did some insane 80 mile ultra overnight marathon in Minnesota earlier in August being a prime example.

2. the previous 7 years of paying a high monthly gym fee proved that simply paying a lot of money for something isn't going to be incentive for me to go.

3. when looking at gym in the area and having a noxious cleaning agent set off chest pain and headache during a saturday afternoon tour proved that I'm unlikely to do something that is going to have me feeling sick for a majority of the day.

So, cue me looking around and deciding to go the personal trainer route. Most in this area have their own small studio with no more than 2 clients working out at a time, so less chance of an axe body spray setting me off. Of the 3 i emailed, only one replied so I went with it. The initial evaluation went fine, nothing wrong on noxious cleaner stage. They are in small building/shack with a fitness studio on first floor and massage/pilates studio upstairs and no closed doors in between. But the masseuse was working that day and all seemed good.

Second appointment and first true session went GREAT. Granted, I was broken completely for 4 days because it was a massive leg workout, but overall good.

So, after yesterday being the first day all week with no pain, I went back today. The building was open to the outside today, doors etc, since it's beautiful. I was kind of stuffed up since I need to clean my house, and my chest started to ache a little, but I thought it was just because my lungs really don't like exertion in the cold and being out of shape and ignored it. I did notice there was some incense going from the massage studio upstairs, but as Cherry will attest, usually when I'm having an allergic to inhalation stimuli, i start having a violent coughing fit pretty fast. Or at least that's how I remember it. And i wasn't having any urge to really cough, just that low burn in my lung.

After a few round of pushups, squats, chair steps and arm curls, we went outside for walking lunges since it is so pretty and nice. And omg, my chest started feeling a lot better even though i was still exerting etc. Then back inside and the pain started, and my muscles started to do the fun weak/flabby feel routine that they should only do after a lot more working out or 3 days of fever. And i wanted to hurl. Told the trainer and we moved outside again and I felt better. But as is the case when you have a weak/flabby feel going on, the next set of exercises (hop squats) resulted in me pulling either part of my hammy or my groin slightly. So we were going to go easy on that, but also every time my heart rate went up I felt like hurting and pain in my chest wasn't going away, which didn't make breathing hard but it's uncomfortably like having a side stitch from sprinting except in my lung.

Trainer told me to sit and wait it out. And of course, I'd gotten overconfident with not needed extra benadryl with the train commute of people who feel they must wear scented products and had left my benadryl (and epi) at home. OH xyzal, you do prevent a lot, but after the reaction has started, yeah, something else needs to be added.

5 minutes of sitting, and switching from my coconut water to plain water, and i felt a little better, but it all came back every time my heart rate went up, plus my pulled muscle, and I decided to call it. On 8 minute drive home, still felt crappy but having windows open etc my nauseau was going away though the chest pain was starting the fun "oh, hey, let's make the ear hurt".

So now I'm home. I've had a benadryl and no longer feel like a floppy doll and the pain in my chest is just a slight ache where I can feel it trying to get rid of the inflammation it had flare up and my ear is mostly back to normal. And I've written the training studio owner so he and the trainer know I'm fine and I guess I'll see if he decides to keep working with me or not. I have requested that he find out when the massage appointments on weekends are and I'll go ahead and get my ass out of bed early on a saturday if it means we can work out before the massage part starts up (since I doubt that they'll just stop using incense with their clients because of 1 training client).

So moral of the story: I should stop being overconfident idiot and take my benadryl everywhere.
Also, I was stupid to go ahead and pay all money up front for 10 sessions just because 2 times went great.
Third, when I've gone for 2 months without an inhalation reaction, it is oddly nice to be reminded of the magic of benadryl in chasing away the various symptoms of a full blown allergy attack (chest pain, nausea, full head phlegm, muscle weakness, and unreasonable anxiety/anger)

And lastly. I hate being a human canary. I have also decided that since incense is supposed to be used to please the gods and/or repel spirits, that instead of saying i have allergies, I will now claim to be a demon instead. :P

I had a similar overconfidence situation during our move. I had been in an animal car (a friend regularly transports her two cats to her cottage in said car) for around 2.5 hours but thought that I'd be fine carrying heavy items up and down stairs a few days later. Nope. Residual lung stress from the animal plus the dust and exertion made for a very unpleasant afternoon because I'd left my inhaler in my purse at the other house :(

Hopefully there can be some way of accommodating your needs at the studio. I feel you on the wanting to get into shape. I've just started walking to work from the new house, and our corporate gym memberships kick back in once October starts so I've got my fingers crossed for a more fit autumn.

I actually used a different route this morning, it shaved 5 minutes off my trip and the crossing was much longer :)

I'm only worried now about the snow in the winter. My actual street doesn't have sidewalks so winter walking will be very dangerous. I'm eyeing a different route, but it will all depend on if the neighbours have their shoveling done by 7:30 when I head out. I may have to go back to driving or take the bus.
