that's quite enough

Dear weather--
I'll be much obliged if you'll stop your novel thing of multiple storm fronts in a single day. My sinuses had really forgotten how much they hated it, but now that they remember, we can quit. K? Thx.
-your human barometer.
Work so much less stressful now that boss is back. Of course, it is all pretty much impossible to manage to take a day off this week or next, so I guess I might as well just suck it up till my vacation. Which, I'm thinking my plans for that will change some given that the docs have tried (and failed) to kill/maim my mother again, but I need to plan out driving routes to see...And email people to find availability/places they'll be.
So, Monday the first, they insisted my mom undergo a heart cath as her chemical stress test the week before indicated an issue that may be a blocked artery. That went fine and they found no blockages worthy of stents, so yay. Then she had preop that friday for another finger amputation the next week (which they are hoping they caught in time that the tip they took off above the knuckle will suffice and it will heal because if they take it off below the first knuckle, you lose substantial finger strength due to loss of tendon connections).
Either at some point that week, or earlier, she managed to cut her shin and it had gotten infected. But at preop, the docs said they didn't want to start her on an antibiotic but took a culture of it just in case.
So Monday the 8, she goes in for the amputation. As they are sedating her, she overheard the nurses saying the culture had come back staph, but since no isolation orders were put in, it must not be MRSA and so the procedure was a go. *rolls eyes* Amputation went fine, and the surgeon put her in the normal soft cast that they've taken to using for her so that she doesn't bang the finger and reopen the wound.
By Tuesday night, she was running a fever with body-shaking chills. Wednesday, dry heaves entered into equation and fever wasn't dropping below 103. Started the calling of the heart doc that did the cath and the surgeon that did the amputation. They both insisted that their procedures weren't involved, and advised her to call the other.
By Thursday, nothing changed, so heart doc finally agreed to see her (told her at 3:30 if she could get her there by 4:30 to evaluate her). When they did, they said that the shin wound wasn't any worse, there was no way the puncture to the groin could be involved as it was closed, refused to give her antibiotics, and advised her to see her gp the next day (when she's still running consistent 103-104 degree fever).
As neither of my parents are fans of emergency rooms, they went ahead and went home w/ plans to go to the walk in clinic the next day, where my mom saw an rn as her normal gp was out. RN took one look at her shin wound (not to mention how white my mom looked. Which, she normally has a good amount of color for a blonde Caucasian that rarely gets out into the sun). Immediately gave her a shot of a high dose of antibiotic as well as scrip for cipro and said if she didn't feel better with break in fever by Saturday morning she should go ahead and check into a hospital. Otherwise, check back in on Monday.
Fortunately, the shot did the trick and the fever started to break by that afternoon and was gone by the next day.
*head desk* When the blood counts that were taken on thursday came back on monday, her wbc were 14000. Which is pretty damn amazing when you consider she's on a constant dose of steroids due to adrenal insufficiency.
Seriously, just WTF? I'm amazed they didn't start her on one before she went into hospital. But to then not just call her one in when she informs you that she has a fever and is vomiting?? Granted, could be a virus, but given the wound and the number of other wounds inflicted, couldn't just go ahead and try it? Especially given that the woman has never had a staph infection heal on its own in the last 5 years.
Gaaaaah
