Okay, so this is a rant on the current s2 of Rizzoli and Isles....Venture under the cut if you don't mind being spoiled about the first 2 eps of s2, and you don't mind hearing me rant about the current themes of stories thus far...
Okay, so s1 happened of Rizzoli and Isles. And while I'm not fannish enough about it to rewatch massive amounts, I recall really liking it! I recall a show about 2 competent women, who were somewhat polar opposites, coming together and having an adult relationship we don't often see depicted between two women. It wasn't entirely without it's flaws (mostly the sudden "omg, I love you" for wahlberg's character there when he left for blue bloods, but still).
And then s2 started. After about 15 minutes of it, I already started worrying..Especially given that the exec producer, who was also around in s1, wrote it. I mean, we have the sudden divorce of Jane's parents causing her mom to act like a complete and utter stereotype with no agency whatsoever. Jane somewhat in character in response, but I still have a feeling that she might be a little bit more comforting even just in reaction to that somewhat. Mix in the UST with guy that she also had UST with in high school because "he was intimidated and scared by her". WTF? Seriously? And then top it off with Moira being with a jackass surgeon - though at least she did dump him when he got too in her face at the end.
Then last night, with a new writer (though one who apparently will write multiple eps this season), we get shoved down our throats how every woman must have a mothering instinct and want a baby. Jane resists somewhat but then even the end is all about her "mothering instincts" rather than it just be about a cop's instincts to protect innocents. And of course, the divorced mother with empty nest syndrome who says she's not good at anything other than being a mom so of course Moira arranges for her to volunteer as a kangaroo mom...instead of, I don't know, taking the opportunity presented by the art bit to get her involved in community programs that would potentially also have people her own age.
Just gahhhh. Not to mention the whole overtones of "too bad the mom died, but at least she completed her incubator duty". I seriously do not know if I can keep watching the show if this keeps up. I mean, I'm finding Memphis Beat more compelling and less angering (and that's like my least favorite "take up time" show to watch).
I'm wondering if they changed the flavor of the show based on network notes or what? Which is really sad given that it was so high-rated and acclaimed last summer. Disappointing TNT.
ION, I'm really annoyed that people on comcast can't get DirectTV channel. Also, that the new season of Damages isn't available on amazon or itunes apparently until the season is over. At least there I don't have to worry too much about anti-feminism creeping into my female relationships.
