Please blindfold the children at checkout...

Seeing this post at pandagon reminded me of how I started seething when I was in the checkout line at Target yesterday.

In addition to the "Oh, nos, Evil Jolie is turning Shiloh into a boy" cover, there were also wonderfully happy covers of how Vienna is evil and duping Jake accompanied by the normal "X actress/model lost weight and you can too". It was 6-8 magazine covers completely focused on obeying the patriarchy and fitting into societal image norms and it made me so nauseous.

Also, how awful to subject children that can read to these headlines. I can't imagine how parents might explain these things. It makes me miss my childhood of the National Enquirer telling us the world was going to end, that Elvis was indeed alive and an alien (my mom really loved explaining that to me), and Russian conspiracies. And by the time I was a tween/teenager, there was at least Sassy to undercut some of the other mags.

Just ugh. Please please blindfold your children from this crap. Ugh.

My personal favorites were the continuing adventures of BatBoy. He was awesome. Did you know he even helped soldiers track down Osama bin Laden in the caves of Afghanistan? Love him. ;)
