This past week has made me ready to call it quits on TV and news for the forseeable future. I keep hoping the fifiteen minutes is over, and then her face appears in another article, on another celebrity news show, or even on the tabloid rack.

Who'd have ever thought I'd be writing these words and they wouldn't be about Britney Spears or her ilk?

Barbara Walters makes me wish for an era of time when we didn't hear about the personal lives of those that gave us the news. Seriously. I've always been vaguely nauseated at the whole concept of any Barbara Walter's special, but clearly, The View caused something in Ms. Walters' brain to snap. Because now she's had to go and make the news about herself.

I can see the attraction of wanting to write a book about yourself. Really I can. But to then make it into a piece of tell-all trash and drag down the lives and reputations of so many that you've known?? It makes me question your sanity. And not to want to see your face ever again.

I've been over the whole "celebrity is news" schtick for a while now. But, thank you, Barbara, for reaffirming and strengthening my disgust. I will not be reading anymore of the few celebrity articles I used to read ever. I'm considering avoiding any website that includes said news on the front page (this means you, MSNBC). I'd already given up on celebrity news shows way back when they gave any pretence about covering movie/song news and devolved into tabloids.

Barbara, I can only hope that your magnus opus has disgusted enough other people that your little celebrity interviews cease to get any celebrities to interview.

*soft smile* - yeah, there's a reason we don't have TV.

Actually, that's not strictly true. We have a TV. We just don't have anything resembling reception here, and no plans to do anything about it. Because, let's face it, then we'd just watch it.

Meanwhile, as things stand, we can watch DVDs to our hearts content, without ads, and without the dren the rest of the country seems to be quite happy to accept as general viewing.

Just smart. The culture of celebrity, and the value it's placed upon just irritates me.

Actually, I felt old too the other day, when I was talking to this girl I used to babysit and she's starting high school next year.
