Soo, tonight was my first night of Yoga. Which I arrived at successfully despite the building where I was supposed to find the room number being locked. *rolls eyes* I also "lost" my bottle of water in the dressing room (it fell out of my bag without me noticing resulting in me figuring I'd forgotten it) so I got to beg a really nice Dad to loan me 50 cents to buy another one. :) (a little kid's dance class is before us).
Okay, to qualify this, you have to understand I was never very flexible. I clearly remember being in gymnastics at the age of 6 and NOT being able to touch my toes. I think part of that is probably some genetics, but a larger part of it was 1) the frequent courses of antibiotics for strep throat and sundry other things and 2) lots and lots of sugar as a child (true story: they published a paper a few years ago about how white refined sugar results in these "deposits" in your tendons and ligaments that result in decreased flexibility). I'm on the fence as to whether the copious amounts of pseudophedrine have played a roll as well.
So needless to say, even a couple of years ago before I hurt my shoulder, I wasn't flexible. Now, I'm REALLY not flexible even though I do my best to stretch regularly.
Oh, and out of shape .... as evidenced by the fact that my leg wobbled and CRAMPED from just doing the one leg balance stances. *face palm* Then when we got into the plank and the teacher started doing various wierd push up poses...umm, yeah. I was flailing all over the place -- partly because I was terrified to hold any of the poses too long that used my shoulders. Back when my shoulder was recovering, I'd try to do downward dog as a stretch and would result in my shoulder going out for a week.
So yeah, this class is VERY scary for me. But it is proving that I've corrected a lot of my bad posture problems in that I can recognize now when I start raising my shoulders in positions that would cause strain.
Still....I'm faintly scared about how it's going to feel in the morning. Right now it's starting to ache as it gets cold after my shower. Oh well, at least I did all the sonication this morning so I won't be freaking out about needing to put off experiments.
And while I admire and somewhat trust my yoga instructor...umm yeah, there's no amount of money in this world that will convince me to even ATTEMPT any pose that involves standing on my head. seriously. it ain't happening.
