Geez. That's appalling. I wonder if the American Press will even report it, though. What really burns me is that I shouldn't even wonder.
I was at the beach last weekend when the story broke, so I didn't see the beginning of it. But I kept wondering why no one was giving specifics of what the plot was etc. etc. I even asked around how the government had heard about it, and it was all very vague "oh, from phone taps, I think" was the answer. Which made me wonder why those people were even being targeted in the first place. I feel like an idiot, because it never even occurred to me that the reason half of the story was missing from what I had heard was that there was no substance there.
from what I recall, the brits had had these individuals under surveillance for up to a year. Since there was no real imminent threat, they planned to continue to do so, but the Americans pressured them to do the arrests and such early. Scotland Yard wasn't happy, but complied.
again, that's various sources and links I recall seeing from various political blogs. The link above was the first thing that I saw that strongly supported this as being mostly political and blown out of proportion.
