The government needs to get a life
Jun. 2nd, 2006 12:41 pm The Justice Department and FBI want Web usage info saved for two years
Top U.S. law enforcement officials have told Internet companies they must retain customer records longer to help in child pornography and terrorism investigations, and they are considering asking Congress to require preservation of records.
....
Brand said some executives have raised privacy concerns. But she said Gonzales has not made any decisions about how to proceed and that the department would be mindful of privacy.
Okay, you know what, I'm sick and tired of all the fear-inducements to get us to turn over our privacy. Moreover, I'm sick of seeing the media go along with it. I know, I know, pedophiles etc exist, it's horrible for a child to be used, etc. But is that any reason for Dateline to reair it's "To catch a predator" episode EVERY FRIGGING WEEK??? Yes, parents should take precautions to protect their kids from the evil in the world. But at the same time, there needs to be a balance to prevent kids from being SCARED of everything in the world.
Next, dear Mr. Gonzales assures us that the department will be mindful of privacy. Excuse me that I can't believe that that means anything given that a) the government's computers in all branches are woefully obsolete, b) the government can't even prevent the private information of it's military veterans from being stolen and c) anything and everything that might be used to give bipartisan oversight to these "spying" issues is classified away from any branch of justice.
It's bad enough that there's no recourse for individuals marked down on the "no fly" list. Do we really want to risk that the same can happen for anything else? Do you want the FBI to be looking at the photos you post on your website of your kids for your family to see? Oops, little Sally's diaper is sagging -- maybe that's porn.
One things for certain, this makes me want to go back old-school and pay all my bills by check and the good old US post office. At least then I don't have to worry about the government "leaking" my financial info...not that they probably don't already have it and we just don't know.
Is November here yet? Can we get some more Democrats in the Senate yet? Better yet, can we fastforward to 2008 and elect someone with a brain that's not controlled by Cheney and Dobson??
