drama observation
Nov. 19th, 2004 09:59 pmK, so let me preface this by saying that I love fanvids. However, I noticed something that I was curious about. Dunno if anyone else has noticed it too. And this isn't really directly criticizing fanvids as much as it is TV producers.
so just finished watching 3rd watch. For those who no longer watching, the show's producers have taken to ending almost every show w/ a video montage. Now this isn't exactly new. Alot of shows do it...presumably to showcase bands managed by parent companies?? I mean, its not necessarily bad....but it also generally doesn't further the story at all IMO.
So here's the question ---- is this a convention writers are relying on or something forced by producers? Because if it is writers, I think its lazy...if it's producers, I think its lazy.
I dunno, I just tend to start to think of Firefly in this instance. Generally, when a montage is used there (w/ acoustical music rather than the Top 20), the montage actually furthers the story. For example, after Inara sees mal leave nandi's room ---> we then get a montage of what is occuring - Jayne w/ his girl, simon w/ the pregnant woman, and Inara crying. Story furthered. W/ montages of most current dramas, you generally get a bunch of angst ridden scenes that make no sense if you haven't seen the rest of the episode.
Which is where fanvids come in. Generally, you need to be a fan of the show to understand and get a fanvid. I can't go and watch fanvids for Battlestar Galactica or Farscape because I've never seen a single episode (mostly cause I don't have cable and am cheap). However, I love fanvids for Firefly and Iman because I understand why their author chose certain scenes to go along w/ different lyrics. And in this since, whoever is behind the montages featuring popular singers in current dramas is being lazy to me.
I dunno, like I said in the subject, just an observation. Just seems like more and more short cuts are being made in storytelling these days.
I miss my shows.
