Newark International is a cesspool of unhappiness. Detroit is much more suited for somewhat comfortable sleeping-on-the-floor arrangements.
The whole honey-vs-vinegar adage works SO well with the desk people at airports. I have many a time gotten on overbooked flights and the next availables that way.
