Question for all-knowing internet...

My personal laptop, which I haven't turned on in about 9 mos or more, is telling me that windows update can't check for updates because it's not running and that I may need to restart my computer.

I've restarted twice and still have same thing going on. Any thoughts??? Need to figure out if this is fixable tonight, or if I just need to say f* it and take my work laptop.

Oh, trust me. So did I. We spent a lot of time muttering about the fact that that shouldn't have been able to happen.
