Question for all-knowing internet...

My personal laptop, which I haven't turned on in about 9 mos or more, is telling me that windows update can't check for updates because it's not running and that I may need to restart my computer.

I've restarted twice and still have same thing going on. Any thoughts??? Need to figure out if this is fixable tonight, or if I just need to say f* it and take my work laptop.

Thanks!!!

You should be able to run this:
http://support.microsoft.com/mats/windows_update/
for free and see if it helps any.

Maybe this:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_xp-windows_update/windows-update-component-must-be-repairednot-fixed/99bd8203-bb97-421a-aedd-8e35eb8e7af7

(I should add here that I'm the kind of person who tends to go to an IT person after having exhausted all self-help, largely because I've often found solutions on my own.)

Oh, trust me. So did I. We spent a lot of time muttering about the fact that that shouldn't have been able to happen.
