Farscape Vid Recs continued..
Well, I failed to keep doing one a day, but i did do one last week.
Serenity by Dangerous Mind Productions.
Spoilers through Season 4, but the narrative is largely Season 3-ish.
Generally, I find it very had to like a vid to a song that I've seen vidded in another fandom. However, I've only seen Serenity by Godsmack done in the Firefly fandom and for some reason, that vid never grabbed me very much. The song really fits Farscape better I think and DMP takes this vid to another level with intercuts of Godsmack performing the song in concert.
Everyone recognizes that the longer the song, the more difficult it generally is for the vidder. The more source from number of seasons available, the better it turns out, which is where Farscape outshines Firefly. Long songs generally result in the need for "filler clips". Poor choice of filler clips is one of my biggest pet peeves (really, it closely follows extended talky face time). Bad use of filler clips ensures a vid goes to my trash can after first viewing almost always.
DMP gets around this by using the footage of a Godsmack concert to great effect. At first, the images of the band are slightly disconcerting, but after repeated viewings, it works very well and begins to take on the feeling that this song has been written expressly for this purpose. Additionally, the clips are used on a narrative level to divide up the stories of the vid.
We are told three separate stories here
1) John -- Of everyone, this song really connects with John, and John/Aeryn. As soon as John accepts being in the Uncharteds, all he wants is peace. Peace for him and Aeryn, peace for Moya. In season 4, more than that, all he wants is Aeryn. (2:15)
2) Chiana/D'argo/Jothee -- Season 2/3 resulted in the break of Chiana and D'argo, season 4 repaired that slowly to the point we see them in PK Wars. (3:22)
3) Stark/Zhann (3:33)
4) Aeryn (4:14) - I love the ending here of Aeryn overlayed with images of her mother. This brings us back to the Aeryn/John arc touched on in the first sequence.
A very strong vid overall touching on the relationships of almost all of Moya's passengers (Crais, Pilot, and Rygel not being involved. The absence of Jool is what keeps this from being a full on vid through season 4.
