And let the scape-yness begin!

Hopefully I didn't jump the gun too much by going ahead and posting my first rec before DIYA did the monthly round up. *hides*

I recced what was the first vid of Farscape that I ever watched, even before I watched any of the show. This vid convinced me to buy the season 1 starburst editions (affordable! eee!) and then had me competing on ebay for the rest of the seasons because i simply could NOT wait for the rest of the series. I have issues with delayed gratification, yes, why do you ask?

Anyway, I'm going to discuss what my original thoughts were as I remember them and then how much I still love the vid. [livejournal.com profile] exsequar, and anyone else still watching the series for the first time, HUGE spoilers for season 2. So avoid or read at your own risk (I'll do my best to remember to say whether there are spoilers or not for each one. Really. But if you are spoiler phobic, email me at the LJ address and ask and I'll double check for you).

One quick confession to make --- I've recced this vid to many many friends since first viewing it, and about 75% of the time, I'm confused, and attribute it to [livejournal.com profile] lithium_doll instead of [livejournal.com profile] fialka My bad. Seriously. Somewhat understandable given LD's McRae vidding obsession, but horrible on my part. So I'll say it again for the record, [livejournal.com profile] fialka is entirely responsible for this incredible vid. K? Good. I feel better with that off my chest.

First, the music. I'm fairly certain this was the fist McRae song I'd ever ever heard...because for some reason LD had never done a firefly vid to one. Bad oversight on her part *lobs many bunnies*. For those familiar with my tone issues, it shouldn't come as any surprise that I immediately fell in love with McRae's voice. It hits this small perfect spot for me and it will be a sad day if at some point his voice gets worse with age. I continue to sacrifice small sentient beings in the hope that he goes the way of Sting though and only gets better with age. :)

now again, I'd never seen Farscape at all at this point despite the best efforts of [livejournal.com profile] cassiee to talk it up to me. I recalled seeing ads for it back during a short period when my parents had cable which included sci fi channel (which, btw, was during the era of I-man and can I say how GLAD I am to have experienced that since we've never gotten any dvds of any of the seasons here in the US?) and somehow had confused Farscape with the Lexx commercials. Which, nothing against, Lexx fans, but well, I was young and those things just freaked me out.

So I see this vid recced on crackvan one day and I downloaded it on a whim. I don't remember why, but really, best whim I've ever had.

I was immediately taken by the visuals, but moreover by the PAIN and ANGST that crashed off the screen. I had no idea what was going on excep that this cute guy, Browder, was completely and utterly broken in every single scene. The connection between Aeryn and John, combined with the repeated appearances of Scorpius (who I had no clue who that was) just struck me. The way John was haunted. Seeing John morph into Scorpy added another layer and then the end with John and the hair. Just wow. Again, I had no clue what was going on, but the love story was apparent. I didn't know what Scorpy was or if John was just crazy, but I was intrigued.

Quite frankly, it was one of the best vids I'd ever seen. Which at the time, wasn't saying a lot because I hadn't seen many other than Firefly vids, and at that time, Firefly vids weren't that impressive (which, probably explains why I'm so impressed when vids in fandoms I'm not a part of manage to make an impression on me at all -- Many of the early firefly vids, I feel, you had to know the show to understand. Again, my own opinion here).

So, I started watching season 1 of Farscape. And can I just say, at first, I was disappointed. John wasn't in leather. he wasn't in a lot of pain. And where the hell was this walking corpse freak?? So then I skipped the last few episodes of season 1 because the third starburst wasn't out yet and I managed to get season 2 on ebay for a whopping 50 buck discount on retail. (and grad school was hell at the time btw).

So I jump in and was a tad confused, but here was what I'd been prepared for. And then I saw the Princess trilogy and everything started to make sense. I finally had the context for most of the vid (finished off by the end of season 2) and I could go back and watch again.

The tortured nature of John in the vid was fully explained. The layers made sense. The entire vid was a summation of John's torture and insanity of season 2 (and fortunately, didn't spoil the big season 3 premiere).

I'm probably not even making much sense at this point other than "LOVE" because even after repeated viewings, this vid reduces me to putty. More than any other vid I've ever watched, it perfectly pulls at the emotions one experienced the first time you watched the season and makes you want to see it all again. Add to that flawless timing and cuts and transitions (or at least, to my non-vidder eye), and I can't ever see this vid leaving my list of top five vids of all time.

*shutting up now*
