Yes. But when people ARE so emotionally invested, then they tend to be a little irrational. I also think that the way the fan base evolved, there is a strong undercurrent of "we have to carry this whole thing on OUR backs, all the way", which, while understandable, can also be taken to this fanwank extreme.
