Stay-cation it is
So, I was supposed to fly out at 7 pm to go to OK for 2.5 days. Instead I got a text at 2 am saying my flight tonight is cancelled. Which makes zero since given that the weather for NJ appears like it will be fine and dandy tonight. So unless the flight crew decided they wanted early vacation, or there's a massive block of thunderstorms preventing entry to OK airspace, I don't get it. Oh well, flight cancelled and $$ will be useable for another ticket sometime this year.
New job goes well. It's nice to work both with good people and at a place that is interested in giving you perks instead of hoarding money who knows where.
People are fun, and majority are around my age instead of 5 years from retirement (not that that's a bad thing, but well, it's always awkward when there's a 20 year age gap between you and the majority of your colleagues).
The perks at this place are insane and now I see why people who changed companies would be so down on my old MTM stomping grounds (ie, job prior to my foray into the last one).
-Free drinks and snacks (sadly doesn't apply to me)
-Two huge flat screens in the main lunch area that have major sports or local news going all the time. And no one yelling at you not to congregate for the World Cup or to catch a couple of wimbeldon matches
-Lots of regular free food lunches that are randomly scheduled
-Apparently it's common to have a team happy hour prior to every big holiday weekend (free)
-Insurance plans cost about a third of what I've ever paid before (thank you massive umbrella holding company)
-Insurance includes a rebate program to get money refunded for high copays on brand name meds. Of course this is after I found out that the one name brand med I take is being discontinued by the manufacturer and I'll have to get it compounded.
-If you have to come into the office on a weekend or stay super late, they'll repay you part of the money for a meal
-IT told me that their policy is to reimburse me for my phone data plan
-The IT department functions and is well staffed!
All in all, very encouraging. My teams all seem nice and supportive so far. I'm hopeful the honey moon lasts a long time. And I'm not minding the commute despite the NY sauna like days we've had thus far. Though it may make me not quite so sad when fall finally arrives :P Riding the commutes themselves isn't that painful, though the knowing that I won't get home to 8pm every night is kind of a bummer and incentivizes why I need to do so much cooking for freezer meals.
